Theme

Riga is hosting its first NordAN conference by bringing NGO and governmental representatives from all Nordic and Baltic countries to the capital of Latvia to learn more about advocacy which should not only be a theoretical term but it should be manifested in real and effective action. In our context through this advocacy alcohol and drug related harm should be decreased.

Programme

Conference programme involves different approaches and speakers from near and far. We are looking at the experience of advocates from tobacco and alcohol field and their encounters with different industries. We focus on our member organisations activities by bringing you a whole list of good examples. We have also a special place for drug policy matters and of course for the Latvian situation.

European Capital of Culture in 2014

Riga is already a venue for cultural events on an international scale, but in 2014 it will become the cultural epicentre of Europe. During its year as European Capital of Culture, hundreds of special events will take place - culture in the very broadest sense. 365 days a year, with a new understanding of culture as a positive force of change in people's lives.

"I am delighted to invite you to the vibrant city of Riga, capital of Latvia. I am pleased that Riga will host an important international conference about alcohol and other susbtance use that is the most harmful but often neglected social and health problem in our society.Being the largest of the Baltic capitals with a history dating back to 1201 and known for its historical centre being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Art Nouveau architecture and 19th century wooden architecture among other modern and historical possibilities for all tastes, Riga provides many opportunities to its visitors. Coincidentally Riga is the European Capital of Culture for 2014 and will host a number of events during the course of the year. My very best wishes and I am looking forward to meeting you in Riga in Ocotber 2014.”

WELCOME to NordAN CONFERENCE!

After the successful conference last year in Tallinn, with a record high attendance, we stay in the Baltic countries, but move to Riga, cultural capital of Europe during 2014. The theme of the conference will be ”Advocacy in action”, with contributions from experts working in tobacco control and on alcohol marketing. Our Latvian colleagues are doing an admirable work for alcohol policy in Latvia, where problem levels are high, so we can expect interesting exchange of experiences from Nordic and Baltic countries on how to work with advocacy and alcohol as well as drug policy. We welcome you to an exciting conference in Riga!
